Wet Bulb Globe Temperature in North Carolina

National Weather Service Meteorologist Aaron Swiggett says there is also another operational tool available to schools and the sports industry that help determine the chance for heat related illnesses when exercising or working outdoors in the sunshine. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is used by The American College of Sports Medicine for guiding school administrators on guidelines for running safer athletic practices. This is also a helpful indicator for anyone exercising during times when heat illness may develop. There are five different levels of potential impacts based on WBGT ranges for different areas of the country. We are Region 3, and our forecast for Monday runs from Elevated Heat Threats toward Moderate Moderate Heat Illness Threats for parts of the eastern Triad .

The heat index is measured in the shade by using an equation combining the impact of relative humidity on current air temperature. The Wet Globe Bulb Temperature takes into account the following parameters: sunshine, temperature, relative humidity, wind, cloud cover, and sun angle.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) personnel also advise use of the WBGT as a guide for outdoor workers as well as facilities that are not air-conditioned. Swiggert says this new forecast tool became operational in 2022, but it does not replace the heat index.
