A Complete Guide to VCI Packaging

Sponsored content from Tripak Ltd 4 November 2019

Before we get into everything you need to know about VCI packaging, we should first talk about what it is. VCI stands for Volatile Chemical Inhibitors, these are high tech chemicals that are volatile in nature and they constantly vaporize and protect the metals from corrosion.

Why do you need VCI Packaging?

This type of packaging is used to protect against corrosion. Corrosion is a constant, indiscriminate and can be costly to metal parts, this happens especially when packaged for storage and distribution. Other traditional anti-corrosion methods can be messy, costly and also hazardous to not only personnel but to the environment as well.

The packaging constantly releases a mixture of special chemicals that vaporize and create gases which have anti-corrosion properties. These special vapours form a very thin protective layer around the metal surface and prevent the metal from corrosion.

Metal Wrap

There are a range of metal wraps available:

VCI Paper

VCI paper is a matured kraft paper that gives strong protection against rust even in harmful conditions. One side of the paper has been impregnated with high-tech multi volatile corrosion inhibitors. The other side can be coated with polyethylene to make the moisture barrier properties.

VCI Plastics

VCI Plastics are great for protecting packages and also come in a range of different varieties:

VCI Emitting Systems

These are specifically designed for protecting electrical & mechanical equipment against oxidation and corrosion without damaging any electrical, optical or mechanical function of the equipment. They come with an adhesive backed porous plastic dome, containing hi-tech Volatile Corrosion Inhibiting chemicals.

VCI Liquids

These are a pre-wash solution ideal for washing/rinsing ferrous and non-ferrous metal components/parts. It provides an effective method of protection during in-process storage till the final use, protecting the metals through direct contact & vapour action.

VCI Aluminium Laminates

There are two variations of aluminium laminates. Aluminium bags which are flexible, heat-sealable and anti-corrosion barrier laminates consisting of polyester, aluminium foil & VCI polyethylene. There are also aluminium rolls which is a water vapour resistant barrier foil laminate, and is reinforced for seaworthy exports.
